Not too light and fluffy but featuring a very charming and appealing puppet Ovo, expertly manipulated by puppeteer Michelle Robin Anderson, Egg is a mesmerizing holiday offering with strong and rich production values - but ambiguous themes. 

This Children’s show for 8 to 12 year olds feels hazy, bemusing, confusing and comfortable all at once.  However the story requires some thought to piece together and might be beyond younger children who will, never the less, be swept along with the action and songs.  Interestingly it is riddled with some unusually strong innuendo for adults.

Egg is a kind of mysterious road journey through a dimly remembered past.  The two main characters Clyde played by Jim Russell and Horse by Genevieve Morris are reminiscent of Vladimir and Estragon from Waiting for Godot.  This duo has a funny relationship that could be likened to a couple of slightly grumpy grandparents.  They have behavioral patterns they repeat tirelessly, but are not tremendously sure of anything else due to their constant use of ‘Forget-me-yes’ spray.

What Theatre in Education writer Angela Betzien writer is trying to discuss with this work is unclear or perhaps understated and intentionally made vague and more palatable through this particular production.   

Under Leticia Caceres Direction all Creatives; Design (Owen Phillips), Light (Andy Turner) and Sound (THE SWEATS) enhance an over all muted dusty bush/outback feel.  In this dusky established background the beautiful ‘caterpillar like’ puppet character takes precedence as a bright wide-eyed engaging and fragile character that appeals to the nurturer in us all.

The opening night audience was not ideal for a kid’s show, as is often the case; it was heavily papered with industry grown-ups and contained barely more than a smattering of children.  This puts considerable pressure on the performers as they are geared up to engage with children and find themselves facing a grown up audience that seldom responds spontaneously or with the same sense of wonder as kids.

Egg offers children - engaging entertainment and something to think about - these holidays.

Art Flanders and Stephen Nicolazzo have a significant following in Melbourne.  They are, together and individually, unique voices in the contemporary Melbourne theatre scene.  I think it is fair to say their refined yet bright and bold, very visual approach to theatre, flair and irreverence has garnered significant respect from audiences.

Meme Girls is beautifully crafted/Directed - with set, lighting and sound exquisitely coordinated.  It looks fabulous and is lit by Katie Sfetkidis.  Designer Eugyeene Teh has woven her considerable magic to provide a set that infers numerous environments including the probing of a camera lens and perhaps the more relevant circle that is the Looney Tunes iconic signature image.  Over all Meme Girls offers a glorious loud, high camp opportunity to sit back and marvel at what can be achieved. 

However, as representations/imitations of You Tube posts, it often seems flat and without dimension.   Loud, brash, relentless, and generally without the use of the reflective relief of irony, the whole seems to be about narcissism and ultimately feels indulgent and narcissistic.

Assisted cleverly, with exquisite timing, by Art Simone who is dressed in stunning drag, Ash Flanders goes through transformations on stage to portray various fragile characters.  But most of the women vaguely realized by Flanders tend to morph and fade into each other.   They are not adequately integrated as individuals and there is starkness in their portrayal that borders on bland stereotype.  Perhaps it was the result of first night nerves and as Flanders relaxes into the show he will access the feminine with more veneration, joy, enjoyment and definition.

There are at least two opportunities for sensitive and poignant explorations of women finding themselves in difficult and baffling circumstances.  However when rendered as unadorned imitation in a matter of fact way both, intimate revelations, lack dimension and soul.  Perhaps a clearer definition between performer and character or more thorough characterization would add texture and liberate meaning.

The whole is micro-phoned with enough amps to reach into the corners of a noisy nigh club and certainly supports Flanders ultimately rich and agreeable singing voice. 

Sadly I am left with little idea of what the creators are trying to communicate with this slick but lightweight work except perhaps a capacity to bring all elements of Theatre together to create a visceral event that does not require interrogation.

Brecht as current and relevant as ever! 

As touted in the media release this production: ‘In the hands of avant-garde Chinese theatre-maker Meng Jinghui, Bertold Brecht’s morality play about the exploitative power of capitalism will erupt as a cross-cultural, entirely contemporary, theatre experience.’  And yes riddled with Brechtian irony and highlighting his wisdom this production is set to fulfill expectations and more.  It is one of those rare shifts in Theatre that supersedes much of the rest, a unique and potent show, the type as audience, we are perpetually on the look out for.  All creative aspects come together fittingly in the hands of Director Meng Jinghui.

To purge some adjectives first - energetic, invigorating, exciting, vital, relevant, probing, punchy, edgy, visceral, loud and in-your-face.  Whatever! This production of The Good Person of Szechuan is a long, but highly charged, classy piece of solid and impressive, smartly produced Theatre.  It is full of ‘eye candy’ and keeps one engaged and thinking.

Good Person of Szechuan is about Shen Te (Moira Finucane) a prostitute whom, although given a leg up by ‘The Gods’, is perpetually in danger of being exploited by the unscrupulous in an underworld of seething poverty.  To protect herself and her unborn child, and ultimately, to thrive she takes on a second persona of a male cousin Shui Ta who manages to flourish in a grimy cruel world of rancid poverty and drug trafficking.

This production clearly poses the focal question - is it possible to be wholly good in cultures that are, at heart or perhaps heartlessly, driven by economics?  At the same time we are reminded that lives in a community intertwine and influence outcomes for all.

And yes Brecht’s ‘alienation affect’ is honored.  Also, paradoxically is his perceptive eye for sentimentality and our tendency to yearn for a happy ending.  We are denied catharsis, but its possibility is signposted, a number of times throughout.   And this serves to heighten the desire to be embroiled in, of all things, a Cinderella Story.

The casting is nothing short of inspired the actors work evenly as a swift and smooth team on a vast set (Meg Horwell).  Moira Finucaine plays the male and female sides of the same coin to a T without being superfluous to depict gender distinction.  Aljin Abella delights with his endearing characterization of Shu Fu through feisty physicality and light humorous touches.  The three, sharp, idiosyncratic, yet lazy gods are played by Genevieve Giuffre, Emily Milledge and Genevieve Morris who also double as characters in the community.  Daniel Frederiksen embodies a self-serving sleaze Yang Sun with convincing credibility.

The finely integrated musical score is adroitly pitched (pardon the pun).  It is partly DJ’ed and partly played live from a booth on the floor by THE SWEATS/Pete Goodwin.  Thus, it, underpins a sense of immediacy and innovative freshness - complementing the radical imagery and wacky buffoonery throughout.
